The book is divided into five sections. The first and second, embracing ten stories, are acute recollections of youthful experiences. Two stories about the Civil War make up the next section. Four stories, under the heading "Love and Kisses," examine the inevitably changing relationships between men and women. The concluding section, the long story "Eyes to See," is again an adult recollection of an earlier time, and like the other stories, it reveals a sensibility that reflects maturity and reason. James Gould Cozzens (1903-78), born in Chicago but reared on Staten Island and educated at Harvard (1922-4), where he wrote his first novel, Confusion (1924).
